When Hunt Design reach out, I know that something special is headed my way. Recognised as expert master planners and tourism consultants, Hunt Design have coordinated some of the biggest marinas in Northern Queensland, island safe harbours, marine infrastructure and tourism moorings.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to work alongside Gary and his team – to explore their design ideas and breathe life into numerous projects. A compilation of these projects can be viewed here.
“The interpretation of dreams is a great art.” – Paracelsus
As is often the case with these early conception proposals – timeframes are tight, documentation is scarce and architectural ideas evolve on an hourly basis – thus limiting their ability to create any detailed marketing quality renders of anything beyond the master concept.
This is where an experienced illustrator can become an invaluable asset to the design/competition process. As the architect focusses their efforts on refining the overall planning for the project, they use what little time they have spare to send through a sketch outlining a part of the development they wish to embellish. (I use the term ‘sketch’ loosely.)
After spending time digesting the above-mentioned sketch (often with plenty of alcohol), a brief phonecall is usually all that is required to shed light on the ‘scribbles’. Once the expectation for the scene is set, creative.threshold will begin the process of preparing the model and locking down a camera angle that is best going to capture the space in its best light.
Projects like this are often the most exciting and challenging to work on, as the responsibility to interpret the architect’s vision and ‘sell the dream’ falls back onto the illustrator. With little to no documentation, it is a privilege to bring a scene to life and hopefully exceed the architects’ expectations.
Not all visualisation jobs are like this. It takes many years to develop this type of working relationship. Hunt Design has entrusted me with many exciting projects – this being one of my favourites. With that trust, comes a responsibility to deliver marketing quality images – often with minimal instruction, documentation or time.
So rewarding to glimpse into the mind of an architect and visualise my interpretation of his vision.
